What’s Nutrition Have to do with Back Pain?

It took me over 40 years before I decided to look into this whole “Nutrition” thing.

Seeing ads for weight loss schemes, magic pills for this and that, and just promises that seemed too good to be true created, for me at least, an aversion to trying any supplements, herbal remedies, or concoctions.

I felt like I had been scammed enough times and I’m not going to allow these bogus pill-pushers to get into MY wallet!

Guess what happened?

The Nerd in me started asking questions:

Q: What exactly is hurting?

A: On a good day I just feel a general soreness typically between my shoulder blades, sometimes at my neck, and always in my lower back.  Most days I have this tingling-numbness running down my rear to my legs and also down my arms into my hands.  On really lousy days I can barely move due to a few bad discs pushing up against nerves in my spinal column.

Q: What would have to happen to relieve the problem?

A: The inflammation would need to be eliminated, and the discs need to back off the darn nerves!

Q: Is that possible?  How?  You don’t know anything.  You’re not a doctor.
A: I don’t know if it’s possible.  I don’t know how.  Hey, that’s not nice!  Let me ask around, do some reading and research.

So I did research.  I did much reading both online and off, asked many humans, and learned that, to my surprise, many people that I knew personally had experienced positive results from something that I had never taken seriously: Nutrition.

A colleague at work swore by his smoothies to make his arthritic hands feel better.  He even mentioned how when he would forget to make his smoothie he knew it because the pain in his hands would return.

A friend at church told me about a herb that’s been used for more than 2,000 years (It’s even mentioned in the Bible) that he had been using.  It relieved the pain in his knees and spared him from having knee surgery.

My Pastor and his wife shared with me what supplements they have been using and the positive effects they have experienced such as lowered blood pressure and cholesterol.

So I began learning about how anti-inflammatories can reduce inflammation which in turn leads to better blood circulation, quicker delivery of nutrients to the inflamed area, and faster healing.

Not only that but natural anti-inflammatories will not harm you like over the counter NSAIDs such as ibuprofen (trade name Advil) and, most importantly, they WORK!

What about inflammatories?  Are they a thing?

Yes!

Just by no longer consuming things that can cause inflammation you can significantly improve your well-being.

Consume Anti-Inflammatories + STOP consuming Inflammatories = RELIEF

This new found fascination with nutrition led me further down the rabbit hole and I discovered new (to me) things such as:


How free radicals damage our bodies cells and how antioxidants destroy them
How anticarcinogens inhibit the development of cancer
A nutrient that may help restore discs
Immunity-boosting nutrients
